LOCAL SANTA BARBARA CONTRACTOR AND ARCHITECT AWARDED "THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS BUILDER'S AWARD IN THE NATION," AT 37TH ANNUAL GOLD NUGGET AWARDS CEREMONY HELD IN SAN FRANCISCO.

Santa Barbara, California (July 5th, 2000) - Local Construction and Architecture firms were recently honored by the Western Builders Association and Builder Magazine and received the "Gold Nugget Award," in San Francisco, for the design and construction of an innovative affordable housing project, just completed in downtown Santa Barbara, California.

Melchiori Construction Company and Bialosky Peikert Architects of Santa Barbara were saluted with the Merit Award as well as the Project Grand Award, synonymous with the building industry's most coveted recognition, this past week at the 37th Annual PCBC Gold Nugget Awards ceremony. The Garden Court at De La Vina, an assisted living community for the frail and elderly, is a Victorian styled showcase for Santa Barbara, which was awarded as "Best Affordable Project". With over 600 entries from 14 Western States and all countries bordering the Pacific Ocean, the excitement of the "Academy Awards style presentation" was unprecedented. The competition provided a display of some of the most innovative builder and architectural excellence throughout the 14 Western States.

This project stands as an example of what can happen when a team of Santa Barbara's finest come together for a worthy cause, in this case, affordable housing for senior residents who may not be as financially able to afford a quality living environment. The Garden Court at De La Vina represents a team effort on behalf of everyone involved.

The beautiful and functional design of Bialosky-Peikert; tax credit financing by Frank Thompson; real estate financing by Santa Barbara Bank & Trust; leasing contribution of the City Redevelopment Agency; management services by The Urban Group; backing of Kaufman & Broad Multi-Unit Housing Division/Simpson Housing Incorporated; Construction and Construction Management by Melchiori Construction Company; and the resounding support of the City of Santa Barbara and the City Housing Authority made this project an overwhelming success.

The Garden Court at De La Vina Project Team recognizes the City of Santa Barbara's pride and strength in coming together to provide our community with not only the emergence of an affordable community for our seniors, but also now, a nationally recognized landmark capturing the beauty and community pride that is Santa Barbara.
